35 Best Things to do in Lapland in Winter – Ultimate Lapland Bucketlist Written by a Finn

things-to-do-lapland-winter

Personally I’ve gotten so tired of reading these:

“5 best things to do in [apply random city in Europe] and all of these suggest strolling around the old town.

I mean what activity is that, everyone will very likely walk around the city centre without reading a tip for it online?!?

So on this list I tell you what to do in Lapland if you really want to do cool bucketlist things and also see Lapland from locals’ perspective.

Personally I’m from Finland and have lived and studied in Lapland several years as well. So in this list you find unique things to do in Lapland that are surely not listed in Tripadvisor or other huge travel business sites.

1. Chase the Northern Lights

This is probably one of the main reasons people want to travel to Lapland.

After having witnessed northern lights dozens of times, I still understand why. I have written you tips how to experience the breathtaking Aurora Borealis, nature's most spectacular light show, dancing across the Arctic sky.

2. Reindeer Sleigh Ride

Reindeer is a majestic animal, and for some reason their behaviour reminds me of camels in Sahara. Glide through snowy forests on a traditional reindeer sleigh ride. Discover the ancient Sámi culture, enjoy the serene landscapes, and learn about the deep connection between the Sámi people and their reindeer.

Fun fact: You can even drive yourself a reindeer driving license, which qualifies you to ride a reindeer sleigh for five years. :D You get the card only if you stay on the sleigh for the whole ride.

You can do this for example in Rovaniemi in Konttaniemi Reindeer Farm

3. Husky Sledding Adventure

Feel the thrill of mushing your own team of huskies through the pristine wilderness. This exhilarating activity is both an adventure and a chance to bond with these energetic and friendly dogs.

You can do this for example in the safari with my friend Pauliina in Ivalo at Happy Huskies.

4. Snowmobile Safari

Even if you are not into motorized vehicles, I recommend not missing out this feeling of cruising quickly in powder snow.

Speed across frozen lakes and through snowy trails on a snowmobile safari. This high-adrenaline activity offers a unique way to explore the vast and beautiful landscapes of Lapland.

You can do this for example in Levi with Tokkasafaris or you can browse all snow mobile safaris in Lapland here.

5. Visit Santa Claus Village

If anyone was still doubting, Santa Claus is from Finland. Embrace the christmas spirit year-round at Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi.

Best thing to do in Lapland at Christmas is obviously to meet Santa himself, send postcards from the Arctic Circle, and enjoy various festive activities that delight both children and adults.

7. Ice Fishing on a Frozen Lake

So this patience-requiring activity is an actual hobby that all the Finns do (if not for fun, at least forced once as a kid). By booking an ice fishing tour you can learn the techniques, relax in the tranquil environment, and, if you're lucky, catch a fish to cook over an open fire.

Fun fact: The ice fishing technique moves are also great to show on the after ski disco dance floor. :D Ask any Finn at the nightclub and they'll show you.

Warm up and unwind in a traditional Finnish sauna. Often combined with a refreshing roll in the snow or a dip in an ice-cold lake, this cultural experience is both invigorating and relaxing. Trust me, you will feel good afterwards.

9. Cross-Country Skiing

For me it is weird when most of the people refer to downhill skiing when they say simply skiing. The Finnish skiing is cross-country skiing, which is done in schools and at freetime.

This popular Finnish pastime is a great way to immerse yourself in nature, enjoy the silence of the snowy wilderness, and get some exercise. If you have never tried it, I recommend having a class of learning the technique – that way you learn it fast and can enjoy it more.

10. Visit the Arctic SnowHotel

Stay at the Arctic SnowHotel, a unique structure built entirely of snow and ice. Marvel at the intricate ice sculptures, enjoy a drink in the ice bar and sauna, and even spend a night in one of the ice rooms for a truly memorable experience. The details sculptured on ice are stunning.

The contrast of fast running rivers and frozen nature provides unique hiking experience in Lapland. You can go hiking nearby Rovaniemi for example to Vikaköngäs or Vaattunki.

12. Sami Cultural Experience

If you are into cultural experiences and interested in learning more about indigenous people, immerse yourself in the rich heritage of the Sámi people, the indigenous inhabitants of Lapland.

Participate in traditional crafts, listen to joik (Sámi songs), and learn about their history and way of life. You can also visit Siida museum in Inari.

13. Snowshoeing Adventure

This is a must-do if you are not into cross-country skiing, but would still like to immerse into nature. Snow shoes are awesome as you can venture on an adventure to the untouched powder snow without being worried to drop into 1,5metre deep snow. This activity allows you to explore untouched snowfields and forests, providing a deeper connection with Lapland's pristine winter environment.

Tip: Snowshoeing trip is a must-do if you are into nature photography as with snow shoes you can access views off the beaten path.

This one requires ideally some climbing experience, or adventurous mindset and sporty attitude. Ice climbing on frozen waterfalls of Lapland is truly unique experience. This challenging activity provides an adrenaline rush and stunning views of the frozen landscapes. Check it out here.

This is of course one of the best things to do in Lapland, Finland in December. Hit the slopes at Levi Ski Resort, one of Finland's premier ski destinations. With a variety of runs for all skill levels, Levi offers a fantastic alpine experience in the heart of Lapland.

Tip: If you are really into skiing, you should stay in this fantastic Panorama hotel in Levi where you can ski in and out from.

20. Attend a Northern Lights Photography Workshop

You have probably seen so many stunning Northern light photos on Instagram that you would think it’s an easy task. However, Northern lights photography requires skill and technical knowledge to not to get grainy photos.
