Manduka Pro Yoga Mat Review - Read before purchasing

manduka pro yoga mat honest review

This famous yoga mat among especially among yoga teachers comes even with a lifelong warranty.

Is it really worth all the hype?

Read my honest review before purchasing.

Designed to accompany you on your yoga journey for years to come, this beloved yoga mat is a top choice among yoga instructors.

It offers exceptional cushioning, stability, and grip, maintaining its quality even after enduring rigorous practice sessions over time.

TLDR; Should you buy Manduka pro? My verdict

When it comes to durability and stability, few yoga mats can match the Manduka PRO.

I've had the privilege of practicing on mats that have weathered five, ten years of use, and the Manduka Pro maintains its shape and strucutre very well compared to some natural rubber, PVC, Yute and Cork mats.

The Manduka Pro yoga mat is probably the last yoga mat you buy because it's high quality and it comes with a lifetime warranty.

However, if you need a yoga mat that has good grip for sweaty practices and workouts and is light to carry around, the Manduka PRO might not be for you.

THE BEST PART:

  • Backed by a lifetime warranty for long-lasting use
  • Provides firm support for inversions and balancing poses
  • Preferred by yoga instructors for its reliability
  • Ideal size, you can also purhcase longer and wider versions of the Manduka Yoga PRO

NOTE THIS:

  • If you are used to soft cushioning, this may be too hard for you
  • Considerably heavier compared to other mats
  • Tends to be more slippery when wet
  • Requires a break-in period for optimal grip

What people say about the Manduka Yoga PRO -reviews

It’s the standard in what mat should be. The only one I buy for gifts for others and I’ve been using my same mat since 2019.

Review by Stephen on: Manduka PRO™ Yoga Mat 6mm - Diamond Colorfields / Standard 71" (180cm)

Easy to clean, great thickness, easily rolls out without curled edges. Great product!

Review by Jane. on: Manduka PRO™ Yoga Mat 6mm - Black Thunder / Standard 71" (180cm)

My first REAL yoga mat!

My first yoga mat that wasn’t meant for a beginner. What a difference.

Manduka Pro Yoga Mat PROS

IMPERMEABLE SURFACE

Manduka PRO mat is a very high quality yoga mat with a closed surface. This means that no bacteria, sweat or dirt can penetrate the surface of the mat. That's why the PRO mat has a lifetime guarantee.

PADDING

The Manduka Pro yoga mat has two different thicknesses: 6mm and 4mm. I took a 6mm mat so that there is more padding for the knees. This also adds weight to the yoga mat, so you should choose according to whether you want to carry the yoga mat with you to, for example, a yoga studio.

LIFETIME WARRANTY

Manduka's yoga mats have a lifetime guarantee when you order it directly from Manduka's online store. When you order there, you also get 15% off with the code SINIMALISM. You can read more about the lifetime warranty here.

FOR THE EXPERIENCED YOGI

Even the name Manduka PRO indicates that it is not a yoga mat for beginners, and I would not primarily recommend it for beginners.

This is because the mat has a rather slippery surface, compared to, for example, natural rubber mats or Manduka's GRP yoga mat. The yoga mat surface therefore effectively develops the use of bandhas, as the surface is slightly slippery.

SIZE OPTIONS

The Manduka Pro yoga mat is available in a standard length of 180 cm, but also for taller yogis, a mat that is 215 cm is ideal.

The 4.7mm Manduka PRO mat is also available in a long and wide mat, which is absolutely wonderful if you have, for example, your own yoga studio room at home.

After a few practice the grip is perfect

After 10-ish practice the grip got perfect and still than I love to use my Manduka pro, and I'm never going back to any other mat again 🥰

Review by Sarolta on: Manduka PRO™ Yoga Mat 6mm - Earth / Standard 71" (180cm)

I have had 4 eko mats, but I decided to try the pro because I like the width 26" and I like the 6mm thickness. LOVE this mat--I should have chosen it years ago!

Manduka Pro Yoga Mat CONS

DIRT ON THE SURFACE

Because the Manduka Pro yoga mat does not absorb any bacteria, sweat or other dirt particles, at least in my own use, a little visible dirt easily accumulates on the surface. This is easy to clean though even just with a dry cloth.

SURFACE SLIP

I do not recommend the Manduka Pro yoga mat for beginners, because the surface does not have a particularly good grip from the very beginning.

The grip does improve when using the mat, because the surface structure needs to "break" first. Manduka recommends rubbing the mat with salt water as an initial treatment, so that the structure of the impermeable surface is "broken" and the grip is improved.

WEIGHT

If you are looking for a yoga mat that you carry lightly, the Manduka Pro 6mm mat weighs 3.4 kg, so it is not the best option.

The 4.7 mm thick PRO mat weighs 1.9 kg, so it is already a better option.

NOT ECO MATERIAL

Although the Manduka PRO yoga mat is OEKO-TEX®️ certified and zero-waist made to last, it is made of PVC. If you prefer a yoga mat made of eco-materials, I recommend looking at the Manduka Eko yoga mat, which costs €102 and €81 with the SINIMALISM discount code. It is made of natural rubber.

Don't sweat

The mat is very slippery for those that sweat.

Review by M on: Manduka PRO™ Yoga Mat 6mm - Midnight / Standard 71" (180cm) from Manduka

Great mat in almost every way

I like everything about it. Except it's a little more slippery than I expected.

Review by Robert on: Manduka PRO™ Yoga Mat 6mm - Black Thunder / Standard 71" (180cm)

Size is great, but not quite grippy enough for standing poses.

The size is exactly what I was looking for, but unfortunately I find it pretty slippery for practice. I’m really hoping it gains grip over time.

GRIP

While many yoga mats want to provide a sticky grip, Manduka took a different approach by creating a surface that's intentionally not overly sticky, striking a balance between grip and slide. This makes the Manduka PRO one of our top picks for seamless vinyasa flow, where you move in sync with your breath.

While ultra-grippy mats can be beneficial for beginners or those with sweaty palms, they can sometimes hinder smooth transitions between poses, prompting you to step into positions rather than flow naturally with your breath.

The PRO's textured surface provides just the right amount of grip without excessively locking your hands or feet in place. This texture allows you to feel grounded and connected in poses, such as Bakasana (crow pose), where you need to balance on your hands.

Although some users may find the PRO slightly slippery initially, it breaks in with regular use. Unlike many mats, especially natural rubber, that lose their stickiness over time, the PRO develops a softer, more grippy feel with continued use.

While Manduka recommends a salt treatment to expedite the break-in process, I found that regular practice was sufficient for achieving optimal grip. However, for those who prefer a quicker break-in, applying coarse sea salt and allowing it to sit before wiping it clean may help.

While the PRO provides decent traction when wet, it may not be as slip-resistant as "sticky mats" for those who sweat heavily. Using a microfiber towel can help absorb excess moisture and improve grip. Some yogis indeed like to place a Manduka Yogitoes towel on top of the yoga mat on practices, like hot yoga, where great grip is important. This anti-slip Manduka towel costs € with SINIMALISM discount code.

Additionally, the PRO's less absorbent surface makes it easier to clean and maintain hygiene, as it's less likely to retain odors or moisture.

Personally I like the grip for classes like hatha and vinyasa, but for sweaty sessions like ashtanga, or HIIT workouts I liketo do at home, the yoga mat is too slippery. So with sweaty hands and workouts I use another yoga mat, the Manduka GRP one which has much better grip.

Grippy & Durable

I've had this mat for about a month now and I really like it. I do hot yoga 3 days a week, every week. The first couple of times I used it, the mat actually was more grippy with a towel on it then without. Now that it has been broken in the grip is good both with or without the towel. It is easy to clean. I did a lot of research before purchasing and it seems like this one holds up the longest, and I'm hoping this mat will go the distance.

Review by Cami left on: Manduka PRO™ Yoga Mat 6mm - Black Magic (Purple) / Standard 71" (180cm)

I used it for the first time in a hot yoga class. And it became excessively slippery

Review by Juan on Manduka PRO™ Yoga Mat 6mm - Earth / Standard 71" (180cm)

SOFTNESS

Unlike many other reviews online state this being rather soft yoga mat, I find the surface quite hard and firm especially when using the mat on concrete floor.

However, it is soft in a sense that the PRO surface never abrades the skin when sliding through a transition.

If you are looking for more cushioning, go for the 6mm thickness of the mat. If you really want it soft, I recommend using the Yogitoes towel on top of the mat, which is designed to bring softness and grip.

This way you can make the life-long yoga mat more versatile, as softer yoga mats tends to have shorter lifespan and the surface wears out overtime.

What people say about the SOFTNESS -reviews concluded

I purchased the black purple I think it's called it's of good quality good grip I think I'll still have to add something to pad it more for my knees.

Review left by Debra on: Manduka PRO™ Yoga Mat 6mm - Black Magic (Purple) / Standard 71" (180cm)

Wonderful mat, right out of the box! It came with instructions for reducing initial slippery-ness, but I didn't need to do anything - the grip is great. Love the thickness under my knees. Amazing product.

Review by Terri on: Manduka PRO™ Yoga Mat 6mm - Black Sage (Green) / Standard 71" (180cm)

FIRMNESS

Beyond the studio, Manduka PRO mat's firmness proves beneficial on softer surfaces such as grass, sand, or carpet, where it offers exceptional support. This makes it an excellent choice for outdoor activities like partner yoga and acro jams in the park.

The Manduka PRO is notably heavy, which prevents it from shifting during dynamic movements like jumping from Samasthiti (upright standing mountain pose) to Chaturanga.

Its weight provides stability, allowing you to feel confident while performing head and arm balances. Weighing 3,4kg, the PRO is heavy, but its versatility makes up for the weight. Whether you're practicing indoors or outdoors, on hard or soft ground, the PRO delivers exceptional performance for most styles of yoga.

I like the thickness of this mat - so comfortable!

MAINTENANCE

The closed-cell construction of the mat prevents dirt, sweat, and moisture from seeping deep into the material, making cleaning a breeze. Simply wiping down the smooth surface removes any sweat or grime, leaving the mat looking and feeling fresh. Additionally, the PVC material is certified Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX, ensuring durability and longevity.

In terms of usability, the Manduka PRO is low maintenance, thanks to its closed-cell construction that doesn't absorb moisture. Unlike open-cell mats that require deep cleaning by submersion, the PRO can be easily cleaned by spraying it down and gently scrubbing any dirt or stains. It's important to let the mat dry completely before storing it, and Manduka offers a botanical disinfecting cleaner for deeper cleaning needs.

How to clean Manduka PRO

In daily use: You can just wipe the mat with a moist towel.

For deeper cleanse: I recommend getting this Manduka Mat Wash & Refresh Lavender cleaning spray.

This spray is suitable for all yoga mat materials except cork and made of

100% natural ingredients.
